Question, although probably mostly academic, because I doubt that I'm going to sign up for iRacing just yet.

My problem with setting up a PC for this is mostly form-factor based. I have to race in the living room, and the PS3 fits neatly (lying it it's horizontal orientation) into the entertainment shelving, and serves dual purpose as a blu-ray/dvd player and family games platform. If I ditched the old DVD player, I could fit a PC, but it would need to fit into a similar sized slot. What options are there that would do so? Most regular sized desktop towers wouldn't fit. I have a Mac Mini (it's your GTData server actually) in the office, and a PC of similar size (or maybe 2-3 times that size) would be great, assuming it packed enough processing and video punch to play with good framerate.

There are a few Dell makes that are "slim line" and are thinner by prolly a third. That 620 I got is one. Just have to be carefule if yer replaceing the video card that you get a lower profile card. I didn't know there was such a thing lol, but the normal one won't fit. I assume other companies make a slim line as well. I went looking yesterday online and found a few on Walmarts page that are pretty cheap and powerful, and I think they're slimmer too. Price around $500.

I just googled inexpensive gaming computer and it brought those up. I was actually very surprised with what Walmart had. They were running AMD processors too. Didn't think there'd be anything like it that cheap. Not any big brand names but so what. they had good reviews.

For both horizontal layout and (some of) the intended purpose, the term to google is 'media center pc'.

edit: hang on, thats not right ...

Go to Dell's site, go to the "For Business->Desktops" section, and select the "Ultra Small Form Factor" tower size on the left (When you first load the page, there's a picture of all the form factors lined up, and Ultra Small is the smallest one on the left).

I develop for these at work and they are very small. I have one sitting next to me and it's about 3.5"x11"x10.5". They only have Intel Integrated Graphics, so you might want to consider getting a plug-in video card, but the Intel chip might be able to handle iRacing if you turn the graphics down.

Here's a link to the cheapest ultra small machine.

OK, I'm having a little too much fun with this. Apple makes it too boring: pick A or B or C, see you in another 3 years time sir.

Discovered CyberPower, which has some especially aimed at being small and powerful too.

Should stop this now as it's really only window shopping.

I had a good friend order from Cyberpower and spent the next year only having the computer for half the time because she had to keep paying to ship it back to them for a failing component they could never identify. Not very impressed with their QA or their customer service. But then again, that's why they are so cheap Wink

Get a good one and you can be quite happy with it, and I have read some really good reviews on some sites. On the other hand...

Nice! Now go buy a Mustang and lets do the series. Smile I had so much fun in that car in Season 1 that I'll probably go back to it again.

I actually already have the car but I need a bunch of the tracks. That'll likely be my first D class series when I do buy in to one, which will hopefully be soon.

I'd like to have most of the cars and tracks, but at $12-$15 bucks each, can't really afford to have much.

I... haven't driven it yet. Embarassed

I bought the three tracks for the Cadillac series, the Mustang, the Skippy and the Class B Impala, just before they splt it in to the 2 different cars. I've driven the Skippy and the Caddy, but not the others yet. Been racing the MX-5, Street Stock, Legends and the Solstice. Mostly the MX-5 and Street Stock.

We're going to do some hosted stuff soon, likely with base content... What would people like to get in to? I like the Solstice, but I haven't driven it since the update. It was upgraded to the New Tire Model (NTM) and that does change how the car feels. FYI the MX-5s were already on the NTM, as is the Legends.

Just pm'd this to Wall to help him get oriented.

There's testing alone. Press the test button. No one can bother you, you don't lose points and your license doesn't matter.

There's Official events, what you see on your dashboard or when you click Series. These are license restricted. These start on pre-determined schedules and you must 'register' for them before the advertised deadline. Once that deadline passes you have to click 'join' to enter the room. You can see what your friends are registered for, and if they are already racing you can spectate.

In Official events are Practice sessions, open rooms with all cars on track together. Safety Rating is not affected. Enter one of these and your friends can follow you in.

Next is Time Trials (on hold for week 13). These are open rooms, but you are on track alone, always. Your time is just ranked against the other people in your session. Safety Rating is affected. The goal is to run consecutive clean laps, your score being your average of your best X number of consecutive clean laps. Usually 8 to 10 straight laps are required, incident free.

Next is Qualifying. Open room, all cars on track, Safety Rating is affected, usually 20 min sessions. Your friends can follow you here. Your best single lap is registered as your qualifying time for the races.

Racing is sorted in to divisions, and by rankings and ratings. Safety Rating is affected, of course, and your friends can follow you in. There can be up to 6 or 8 divisions (or Splits as they call them), so you'll only race your friends in official events if you fall in to the same splits.
