Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
I got divebombed off twice, nudged a car off because he moved across in front of me right at the braking zone and then for some reason the guy in front of me braked really hard in turn 7-8. A couple of off tracks and I quit with 14 incidents in 4 laps. -0.73 Been a real up and down week.
I don't get how there's a tolerance for 0x contact, but the slightest off track is immediately 1x.

Welcome to my world lol. I like what you said about the race only being 3 laps lol. I actually had my best lap ever yesterday afternoon. Started 10th which is fine cuz then I'll make it thru the first lap in one piece. Ened in 3rd which is my best finish so far. Got +51 SR so that was good. Fist lap was great at Okay. All I had to do was weave thru the carnage in turn 2 and I picked up 4 spots . Then one guy quit so that put me up quick. The next 2 places were fairly easy, just had to be consistant. Took about 8 laps and I got one, then 2 more laps for the other. Usually get speared or T-boned in lap one which more often than not makes my car undrivable, so this was a good race for me

did my first race this morning, started 8th and finished 5th in an 11 car field. Went off track 5 times (first time during warmup ) otherwise incident free. But I didn't get into a lot of traffic either.

This. I understand less, honestly, how an off-track incident has anything to do with safety. If the game thinks you gained an advantage by going off the track, they have the ability to detect a throttle lift and other things, the game already throws a black/orange (I think?) flag for corner cutting...
You know, handle it like real racing...
On the other hand, making it an automatic 1x makes sure people are attentively staying within the lines. If only the tracks were consistent on when those lines mattered...

Nice job Wall! Yeah, trick is staying clean and getting away from the carnage. Basically, never expect that the guy you're racing has any idea where you are. Most guys in the Rookie series drive like that Toyota driver at Le Mans who took out the Deltawing, "There was a car behind me, it moved right, now I don't see it, must have teleported elsewhere..." *CRASH*
Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
With wheel better set up had another few laps at Okyama. 1'02.odd while trying to get the feel of the turn in (brakes and balance are much tougher to master than GT5, even with ABS off, although I didn't change a setting in the car yet, of course). That downshift oversteer.
Was just about to back out and fetch lunch from the microwave when I discovered that iRacing does not override my 30-minutes before sleeping command. Now seems that kills force feed back. Then iracing site seems down.
Oh well, I'll leave it there for now then.
Also: those irregular off-track judgments.

iRacing on Facebook:
There are some DNS issues on the Internet. If you are trying to connect to the membersite and having issues, you can update your hosts file to direct members.iracing.com to 70.42.50.229. Be sure to back out this change once all DNS issues are resolved.

1'02s are respectable for sure. Rookie events are no-tune events, so no worries there. Odd that iRacing didn't make your laptop not sleep... running in full screen mode?
Okayama lets you run out fairly wide around the final corner, so long as you don't end up in the sand you can be OK. The "standard" is all 4 wheels within the track boundaries...
The kink leading up to the up-hill at Lime Rock used to drive me nuts. 1x...

Hmm... perhaps not sleeping. Perhaps self protective over-heating induced sleep. It happened again well before 30 minutes, even though I've now got all the power options set to "never", and it did feel hot.
Got it propped on a second, smaller book to get as much airflow around it as I can.

And as probably my last post for today, apparently Macbook Pros overheating under Windows is a pretty well established problem. Apparently there is no or very limited active control of cooling enabled on the Windows side, and I have found lots of duplicate problems by no solutions. Barring solutions, I guess iRacing will have to wait.

Is it just when running iRacing? You can lower the graphics settings to decrease heat. Mine get's pretty hot, but it hasn't tripped up ever. I try and prop it up so it can get some airflow under it.

I will prop it up more and I've found a 3rd party fan control utility that's supposed to work for some. I think if that fails once or twice more, I'm going to just have to give up and wait until I splurge on a PC (wish I hadn't just spent $1000 on upgrading/repairing my RAID). I'm concerned if running it all the way to the thermo limiter regularly would be a really bad thing for a machine I rely on for work.
I do have some head room to drop the graphics, I think (getting 70-80 fps on the suggested configuration, but I don't know how bad that will drop when there are other cars on track to render).
Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
Ran it on brother in laws older pc at around 42 fps with no issues fwiw.

started to test with the MX-5 at Lime Rock; so far my fastest lap is a 1'01.5. This track is much more to my liking than Okayama. I believe I have still room for improvement; but I have to find out how to get over that little hill w/o losing the car every other lap.

Forgot to multiquote on the way thru so:
Off tracks go by edge of 'track' (paved stuff or the painted line) compared to the geometric center of car. It's entirely consistent once you understand that.
Getting punted lap 1 is effectively normal in low splits of rookie events as everyone in there is new to everything - simply don't 'grid' and you start from pit lane behind the carnage.

Set 'auto-blip' to 'on' in ... 'garage' I think. If it is already on or doesn't change, then do your own rev-matching (like I have to do because my 'auto-blip' doesn't work).

Early turn in, get on the gas right at the bottom of the hill. Aim for the tire wall on the left and use the runof the otherside if the crest The wiggle wont haapen if your dead straight at the crest. Otherwise just breath the gas as you crest to play it safe.

Learn to rev match. Auto blip is an aid and cause a loss of .025 every up shift

You might want to look at the wheel settings in Windows. Centering spring unchecked helps tame things. I'll double check that when I get home. Thanks to Rooster for that one

This I did not know. I do really want to get my feet to heel toe reliably on the G27 as it just sounds so much better. And know that I hear its quicker, I'm sold.

You mean every DOWN shift, right, or are up shifts faster if you're using the clutch too?
I'm waiting till I get my new rig to start using the clutch and heel-toeing (current rig has annoying bar in between legs). I expect it will result in a sizable hit to my SR and iRating.

I'm sure not only me but all of us would prefer to hear about Silverstone instead of your new rig. But I guess that has to wait until November.
I hope you did well.

Heh, yeah, I'm sure you guys would NDA and all... sorry.
At least it's only a month and a half wait till the show this year, I can't wait to watch it!

DFGT = no clutch. No big deal, I just time my downshifts differently, unless I want the rotation.
Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
I don't use clutch and still have to rev-match. Having a clutch and rev-matching are not mutually exclusive.

Not sure if I understand then. What is auto-blip doing then if not boosting revs to match what the incoming next-lowest gear will require?
This is only when I'm downshifting, probably trail braking a bit and only my shift will put the engine close to redline. I assumed the shift was handled smoothly with a blip via the computer, but at high revs off throttle was causing more engine braking on the rear wheels and thus oversteer
