Assetto Corsa Empty Assetto Corsa

Post  HWKII Sun Jan 19, 2014 2:04 pm

Since I am still simming on my PC for awaiting the impending arrival of a doner PS3, I picked up Assetto Corsa via Steam for $29.99 during the winter sale ($39.99 right now).

Short version: Iz prittee gud.

Long version:

  • Better graphics by a country mile than rFactor2. Added to this, runs better and smoother than rFactor as well.
  • Probably the best sense of "I feel through my wheel what my ass tells me in my real car" of any sim I've driven so far. iRacing has great FFB, rFactor2 has great FFB, nothing about either makes me believe I've really driving a car with a working suspension and mechanical parts like Assetto Corsa. I own an E30 (not M3...) and the E30 in AC feels 100% spot on.
  • Latest update added hilariously bad AI. Not bad at pace (although, I can keep up/finish top 5/podium against "Alien" AI...) but you'd never want to turn the difficulty down. Lower difficulty makes the first lap nearly impossible as bunches of cars hilariously slam in to each other and take high speed corners far too slowly. It's version 0.5, this will get better.)
  • Loads more grip than iRacing, the Lotus 49 in each sim doesn't even feel like the same car (you don't feel compelled to pee yourself going down a straight when the engine gets to peak power). Previous iterations had a traction circle that was actually a circle - you could use too much of too many inputs at once and still easily control the car. Latest update has addressed this and given us a traction "circle" that feels far more correct.
  • Solid and growing track and car selection. Largely focused on Italian cars - this is not a bad thing - but impending arrival of Japanese cars and their fair share of British track cars.
  • OMG THE THREE SCREEN SUPPORT - unlike rFactor, which offers terrible triple-screen support, AC has a built in tool for adjusting the display to fit your screens like iRacing did. I'm going to sound like a hardware snob but the "serious" factor goes up a lot when you're talking 3 screen viewing and it's sad that rFactor couldn't be bothered.
  • Customizable UI - the in car UI uses an 'app docking station' on the right side of the screen (move your cursor over to the right edge and it pops up) allowing you to drag, drop and lock, all of the elements you want and none that you don't. I love this, I didn't know about it until yesterday, but it's where I found the 3-screen adjusting module and  I love you, hard. From the file structure I've seen, the app tool is something open to modders, so real time telemetry? The geekiness abounds.
  • Quite good telemetry tool for reviewing laps against your own best or other drivers while in game.
  • "Career" mode in development.
  • Limited adjustable weather, like iRacing right now, might get better. From what I've been reading, they aren't putting the time in to wet weather simulation because they're a relatively small firm and in terms of ROI, people wax poetic about wet weather racing but poling data suggested that something like 10% of people ever bother to try and run a race with it on...  Bleep! :bleep:ssies. Twisted Evil
  • Cars are skinnable like iRacing, and multiplayer is planned, but I'm not sure if skin sharing will be built in. I hope so (flight sims do this really well, racing sims are generally missing the trick here).
  • Moddable cars and tracks, in that the community, like in rFactor, can develop content. Further questions abound regarding the impact on multiplayer but rFactor2's lobby system does a good job of handling it and frankly but if the bozos at ISI can figure out a way to make it work, the guys at AC don't seem like they'd struggle with this. I have far more confidence in the folks who developed AC than the people making rF2...
  • Have I mentioned how pretty it is? Google compressed the size quite a bit since it was a 10mb screenshot... (CLICK HERE)

Sherlock

Nice write up. Sounds somewhat tempting.

Are you saying that they run AC multiplayer through RF2 servers?

Oh... sorry no, I see why that was confusing. I was saying "not sure how AC will deal with mutiplayer and modding, but if the bozos at ISI can figure out a way to make it work, I have confidence in the AC guys." Will edit.
