Racing on "TV"

Post  timneyb on Fri Mar 01, 2013 12:12 pm

Did we have a topic like this over here already? Couldn't see it anyhow.

V8 Supercars gets underway this weekend, in Adelaide, with Mercedes and Nissan probably getting well beaten as noobs with engines that don't make enough power. Nice city with a strange local favourite: a meat pie floating in pea soup. Meat pies are delicious hand sized crispy pastry filled with thick meat stew, but the pea soup thing is just plain weird. Damn, now I am seriously hungry.

Anyway, I don't like watching Speed's crappy 2 week later, poorly edited coverage. But I was re-reminded that V8 Supercars has an official YouTube channel, with full race replays and occasional live coverage. Anybody know how much of a delay before they release races or how many of them are live or if there is anywhere that has reliable information about any of this.

They were beta testing a subscription based online service last night. I watched some qualifying. I think the live youtube stuff will die once that's in service and people are paying for it.

Thanks.

Why do people always want to get paid for doing stuff? This is not the internet that I sort of pay for, mostly.

jeez, they don't make that easy to find. I know where I'll be at 11pm tonight Smile

I wonder if Van Ginsbergen will be banned from driving his SPR Ford in iRacing too.

Bernie tried that subscription thing for F1. Crickets. The fancy digital truck he bought for the purpose has done the FOM feed since.

Looks like the GA officials are going to be tight asses about contact that not only causes a car to spin, but any contact that unsettles your opponent. Keep an eye out for the penalty that cost the FXDD Ferrari the GT win at COTA.

I was thinking about posting that too. I thought that looked like an iRacing level minor contact penalty. If they were consistent on this half the GA field would be penalised every race, and nobody would finish the Continental Challenge races. Then I thought about the BTCC and V8s and loled.

Little or no sleep last night. Watching some Speed2 coverage of Continental Tires from Atlanta, as coding image processing algorithms is not exactly something my brain is up to.

Normally, when they are in that first 45 minutes of the race that they are going to edit out of the final cut, there are long periods of total commentary silence. This time, it's as if you're on the couch with a bunch of old guys muttering at the TV with you. Not sure if worse.

Edit: Definitely better Smile I don't think it's intentional. Somebody just left a live mike somewhere and you can hear them telling stories to each other. Getting the sandwich orders delivered, etc. popcorn

I watched Bathurst like that last year on youtube. I think I posted about it. They would do the usual throw to commercial, go silent while the director changed feeds, and then spark back up with a little bit looser commentary until they rolled in to 'Welcome back' spiel.

If this was intentional, it's brilliant, but it sure doesn't sound like these guys realise somebody's listening to them. I like the term "semi-save". Seems to be used for spinning through the middle of the field in a fashion that others largely avoid.

v8 live stream/season replays looks like it's now ready for official release, behind a paywall. AU$40 for the season, which is conveniently almost the same number of space credits in the US or Canada.

Not sure if I'll pay into it, but I don't particularly like Speeds super-delayed partial coverage, so I might.

I'm not sure if it will work for them commercially though. Most of their market can watch the races free to air, or at least through pretty standard cable/satelite subscriptions, depending on where you are. A decent portion of the overseas market can watch on Speed. I guess it's just super die-hard overseas fans they'll get, and I'm surprised they think there's enough money out there to cover this.

That being said, whenever I bump into an Australian over here he seems to be an investment banker, so maybe I'm wrong about the money thing.

5:42, P: Two green silhouette racers modeled after Holden Commondores wearing the number ten are racing right now. One is struggling in a NASCAR Sprint Cup race with Danica Patrick behind the wheel, while the other, that of Mattias Ekstrom and Andy Priaulx, is making moves left and right. Ekstrom is fighting Jeroen Bleekemolen, driving along side Shane Van Gisbergen, for 11th.
