Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
Welcome to Pre-Season Testing for DriverSports' newest class, the Tin-Top Touring Challenge. This class will introduce a new form of technical regulations that should allow deliberate, car specific leveling, allowing for a diverse field of cars that are closely competitive.
Race coordinators have identified 8 Premium RWD cars that were able to be built in a way that is verifiable by checking the redline, boost gauge readings and exhaust note and tip. The parts allowed are the best possible combination that will produce the indicated redline with the correct exhaust equipped, which means not only can the race marshals perform post race inspections by reviewing the replay, but so can anyone who has access to the replay file. By controlling these identifiable indicators on a car by car basis the race coordinators were able to find a level of tuning and appropriate indicators for each car that keeps them in a tight range of fast lap times in a testing situation.
These pre-season races will give the directors a chance to see if our theories hold up to pure competition in the hands of skilled competitors before we launch in to a full series. Once the series is underway drivers will be asked to stay committed to one car for the duration, however selection is open for pre-season testing.
For week 2 we arrive at a different kind of circuit, Monza. We are using the weather version though the forecast calls for blue skies all weekend. The TVR has had a small performance adjustment, and otherwise we're happy with the overall results of the first pre-season test and enthusiastic for round 2 and the upcoming series.

I gave these 8 cars a blast a couple days ago. First Monza run I've done and generated tire heat. 1'57.3-1'58.4 depending on car.

With two 10s and a 20 in tims lounge this morning, I'm effectively time-committed to the Z4M this week. Tune in GTData.

Also tunes for Z34 and G35. I'll race the G35 tonight. I think it's too much of a pig to race elsewhere, so I'll run it here, where it's only mostly porcine.
Re: Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
Here are all the GTData tunes for these cars:
And recorded times at Monza (only mine are listed as I post this):
TVR, even with reduced power and increased weight is probably the fastest here.

Q'd the Z4M, it's most likely the car I'll use for the series.

Going to Q the TVR, not because it's supposedly very quick around here, but because it's British. And it's green.
Going to start up a practice lounge in about half an hour.

I wonder how many of the Z4M drivers fell for my old "fake tune" trick ...

It was pretty fun.
I started 5th because I pitted during Q (not recommended), but started well enough to tag along to tim and Roo, Mr. F and biker caught up, Mr.F went through the pack, tim spun out from 3rd, I almost died but got through unscathed, biker braked behind me when I dodged tim so he was out of it having lost draft, about when I caught the lead pair biker was right behind me again.
*deep breath*
This time biker went through the pack, Mr F went a bit wide in the last turn and lost speed, when he came back on I think I punted him back out there, figured I was set for third because I was bad under braking and therefore couldn't pass anything, but then Roo tossed away 2nd in the last turn last lap leaving me 2nd behind robiker.
*ddep breath*
I probly forgot some stuff ...

Re: Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
Made a pre-race change to the TVR, dropping it 10mm front and back. This stopped the horrible horrendous very bad weight shift forward under breaking from being so horrible horrendous and very bad.
The good news: I no longer required a full football field to stop.
The bad news: I did not know this before starting the race...
Passed easily in to Turn 1 due to obscene early braking maneuver.
Feeling confident and brave, braked late for the 2nd chicane... and that's where I figured my race would end. Got out of the pits, put in a couple 1'59 laps and a 1'58.7 (Good change to tune is good). Jochen must have had an incident at some point, caught him up as he was coming out of the pits, diced with him a bit, eventually got around and thought to myself "Hey, maybe I can catch up NoAffiliation and pick up a 6th... Nope.
Parked on lap 10 or so very angry with myself. Will continue to practice, I like the TVR a lot more now that I lowered it.

The race was mine to win and I threw it away in Parabolica on the second to last lap.
Great race all around, I'm happy with most of my drive, but man was that disappointing.

Re: Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
Testing with clacksman showed the G35 could keep up at Monza over the first 10-15 laps, weared it's tires evenly and remained pretty drivable to the end. But those last 5 or so laps were real slow in the corners, being 5 mph or so below the competition mid corner.
So, for the race I took an aggressive strategy on the brakes and dialed the balance 2/7 to the rear. I figured that the car was drivable with 50/50 front/rear wear, then if I could get it to 60/40 it would still be drivable and push a little less late in the race, when it was most vulnerable. I got the wear pattern I was after, but the push still got real bad, and suddenly it got squirrely on exit. Combine that with racing hard to keep up with competition that wasn't losing nearly as much performance, and the obvious happened. I'm glad my spin provided mostly amusement – I couldn't control not coming back across the track as the car searched for a wall to mate with. My conclusion is that the G35 can't win at Monza, so probably can't win anywhere (suspect skinny tires).
Got down in the 57.1s in clean air after my pit though.
I think I will run either the Z34 or the TVR for the series, or maybe the 135i if I want to run a dog (I think it needs a power boost to be competitive anywhere).

Oh, and hey, can I get a hint on what the first track for the series will be? I've got a Dad's night with Owen tonight, which means I'll get elusive practice time after he goes to bed.

Sched for entire series is in the bottom of the OP. The WC tracks are just for looks, rain won't be a possibility.

aha, so it is. I'll book my flight.
Re: Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
I didn't know the Z4 would be the favorite for this race. I just picked it because it sounded good in the video. I didn't allow myself much practice time, either - waiting until about 50 minutes before the Q deadline to get on the track.
My basic setup:
Max aero
LSD 10,20,10
Ride height -10, -10
Springs 9.0, 8.6
Camber 1.5, 1.0
Toe 0,0
Everything else is default, including brakes.
I usually don't change spring rates, but the default front spring rate was unusually low for a FR car, so I raised it til it was slightly higher than the rear.
I only had time for 12 laps of practice, but luckily the car handled well and had even tire wear. After one 5 lap pre-qual run, I was surprised to find I had the second fastest time.
In the race, Forgetful and I started together, but small mistakes in the first two laps caused us to lose touch with the lead trio. Trying to leap frog each other was just slowing us down, so I decided to stay behind for a while and we eventually caught up. My pre-qual lap time and my ability to run with the leaders gave me confidence that I might have a shot at a podium finish, but I wanted to wait til lap 15 to make a charge. When Timneyb spun I had to slow quite a bit and lost Clacksman's draft, but was able to catch back up within a couple of laps. My tires seemed to be in better shape than Rooster's, and I got a good drive out of the last turn on lap 19, drafting by him to take the lead. I was able to put a gap on him in the turns, while Clacksman was struggling to make a pass for second.
I still can't believe I won. It feels great! The competition is really tough in this league.

Re: Pre-Season Testing | Tin-Top Touring Challenge | Sunday Feb. 12 | Monza
Just got finished watching the replay from last night's race at Monza....I cursored around each driver for a few laps, and figured out very quickly that I was pulling gears too quickly to the next higher gear, not waiting for the redline and then some....Went right back out onto Monza Weather change in my lounge, and posted a 01:59.011 the second lap out!!! I was also downshifting too far in 2 of the turns, when I took them now in 3rd, my lap time dropped....I've been overlooking the replays, and now I can't wait for next week...
Thanks again for all the ideas and encouragement...
