The Mustang is at Laguna this week, so I'll be cutting my teeth there while it's on a base content track.

Have you found anything good setup-wise with the Mustang? I bought it last night as I'm going to try and run the Mustang Challenge this season, and the thing is an understeering pig. I guess that's realistic, but it's not very fun to drive IMO. I fiddled with a bunch of stuff trying to make it turn better, and while I had moderate success, most of the changes also made it a lot more deadly with power oversteer.
John - I saw you ran a whole season in the Mustang earlier this year, any words of wisdom?

Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
I just ran it on baseline setup in private testing last night. I also traded a few emails with SpecMiata, so I can tell you that running the full season last time around all he changed was his rear toe from to suit the track. Other than that he was baseline the whole season, which exploded more than a few of his competitors' minds when they inquired about his setup. I kinda just drove around the push, and was enjoying myself.
I was also out in the Solstice for the inRacing News Challenge and that was fun. Less finicky than the MX-5. It doesn't have much adjustability, but I applied the common sense tuning I do know and it opened up what was a fairly tight car. That one is at Okayama this week, and it's Rookie advanced which means you have to be 3.0 or above to enter. Less participation but more experienced drivers. As much as I deride multi-class racing, when you're the driver it is an added layer of complexity that makes for an interesting challenge. These cars aren't very far apart, they just do the same speed different ways, more or less, so it's not like I have to keep an eye on my mirror for cars that are a lot faster than me. That's where I see the fun factor decreasing in multi-class racing.
Shame the Mustang and IRNC are on the same schedule.

Just wrapped up a Mustang race and it was pretty decent. Rough start, but I came from 24th(last) to finish 13th. Good thing I have a few hundred thousand laps in at Laguna Seca already.

Dang, I never knew there was another iRacing page, that explains why the main iRacing thread got so quiet.
As far as tips for the Mustang, not too many really. The baseline is pretty good and can be improved with a few tweeks. First make sure the fuel is down from 15 gallons to around 7.2. I don't think you will use more than 7.2 for any race of the season. When qualifying you can always drop it to 3 or 4 gallons to reduce some weight. Make sure to shift early and take some front brake bias out so you use more of the rear to rotate the car. I'm at 70 right now at Laguna. Other changes I've made are moving the front ARB to Med and moving the rear toe to +0/16".
These changes put me at a 1:38.7 with an optimal of 1:37.8. I'd like to eventually dip into the high 37's but that's highly unlikely, my hope is to qualify at a low to mid 38. We'll see. Laguna has never meshed with my driving style; it's always given me fits in both GT and iRacing.
Good luck!

Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
It was fun racing with you tonight Jeff. I totally didn't mean to join; I clicked on your steering wheel to see what you were doing and noticed you were registered, I went to get a drink to plan on decompressing and watching the start of your race and the next thing I know is the JOIN button is green. Crap!! I thought about forfeiting, but decided against it because it's an automatic 100+ hit to your iRating, so I went ahead and ran the race. It was fun, but it reminded me how important it is to qualify.
I haven't entered a race without a Q time in I don't know how long. it was stressful but fun going through the pack, I just wish I was closer so we could have raced a bit.
Great finish!
PS: Trace McRae is dumb fast isn't he?

Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
LOL at me getting a 1x Off Track during the formation lap behind the pace car. Almost didn't hang on to it.
Then of course I got out of shape in T1 and collected someone else. Luckily I was able to hold on to second, but I'm sure it cause chaos behind me. I pulled out a ~6 second gap over 3rd, but then started making little errors and he came with .7 of me. Thankfully I was able to concentrate and start hitting my marks again and barely finished ahead of him as I caught some lapped traffic on the last lap that held me up a bit.
I probably would've just let you by if you caught up, I'm too paranoid about getting in wrecks. My safety rating stayed flat that race with 8 incident "points" or whatever you call them. It was a lot of championship points though, I'm tied for 3rd overall, and 1st in Division 3

Just got a nice fat +.55 at Okayama in the Solstice. Class D 4.45 ATM, so looks like I'll be fast-tracking to my C license with a few more races or TTs in the Mustang this week (barring any catastrophic hit to my SR)

Nice job Mang!
Jeff, I'm close to the same way with traffic. I feel very blind inside the car with one screen, so people behind me always make me nervous; I also prefer to pressure someone into a mistake rather than force an aggressive pass. The problem is in the higher splits you don't see too many mistakes with the other guys.
Finally qualified tonight, so I'm ready for my next race, I just don't know when the next good split is going to be. That's the issue with racing and not finishing well, now I"ll only have one chance to get a high points payout, if I don't get a good split then iRacing takes the best points of the two events, if I race a third time it gets blended, etc. etc.
Oh well, Laguna will most likely be a drop week for me anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out this safety rating thing.
Inspired by your .55 gain in one Okayama race, I hopped in my solstice, set a nice Q time, and joined a race. It was a large but pretty weak field (19 drivers, 13xx SOF) and I took off from the start and left everyone in my dust. I lapped everyone up to 5th place, and with a lot of lapped traffic, there were a lot of nervous moments, but somehow I managed to get through the race without any incidents, 40 seconds ahead of 2nd. I earned a pretty hefty +.17 SR, but no .55 like you got.
I then decided to run another Mustang race, more for fun than anything since I don't expect I'll be improving my 127 champ points from last night. It was also a small and weak field (9 drivers, 13xx SOF again) and again, I started on pole and left the field behind immediately, finishing 45 seconds ahead of 2nd. This time though, I had to Off Tracks for 2 incident points total. Somehow that race gave me a huge +.54 SR.
So in summary:
Flawless race with tons of carfully tip toeing around slow lapped traffic in a multi-class race: +.17
2 Off Tracks and only having to pass 3 lapped cars the entire race: +.54

I believe the big gains come from moving up a license level.

Re: Season 3 - Starts 30/07/12
I've gotten big chunks that haven't put me up a license. It does seem that there are some other multipliers that we're not aware of. FWIW the Sporting Code does list the known multipliers, but that doesn't explain the discrepancies.

You get a 0.4 SR bump when you cross the 1.X, 2.X, 3.X and 4.X thresholds. So if you had an SR of 2.85, got +0.15 SR from a race, you'd hit 3.0 SR, and immediately get 0.4 SR bump so that you end up with a little cushion for races which require that 3.0 or higher SR (for example). Total gain, as I recall, would display as +0.55 SR on the race that you caught the bump.
FWIW, this happens when you drop from 3.0 to 2.99 as well.

Ah, that's it then. So on my second race, which I didn't think should've been awarded as much, I went from 3.98 -> 4.52 (or something like that), so it was really only a .14 gain, and then an extra .4 added on top. Thanks for solving the puzzle!

I think I'm going to start running GT Challenge (Ford GT + C6R) along with the Mustang. There's a pretty good overlap on tracks, and I need a C class series to run so that I can continue progressing.

So????? Is it spectacular???
In other news, I did my first Spec Racer Ford race last night. Man that car is unforgiving. It has huge throttle-lift oversteer, but that's really the only way you can get the thing to turn, so you have to do it in every corrner. However, if you wait too long and it oversteers too much there's just no way to catch it.
My safety rating took some hits when I Qualified and attempted (unsuccessfully) a Time Trial, I don't think I ever got more than 2 complete laps in a row. But somehow I managed a full 14 lap race without incident and finished right on the bumper of the guy who won. Watkins Glen is fun, it's crazy how much speed you carry through T2-T3-T4.

Oh, the "bus stop" at the end of the back straight: soooo much more enjoyable than the bus stop at Daytona. It's a lot tighter, really satisfying if you get it just right, and I love how it leads immediately into the long right-hander.
Edit: Also, interesting tid-bit - the let you use all of the concrete runoff on the exit of T1 without penalty, so it seemed, at least from the race I was in, that that was the standard practice.

Yeah, I noticed that in the TurnLefts during an open practice session. None of that runoff area counts as an 'Off-Track (x1)' incident. I thought the exit of the final turn at Limerock was generous...

Sorry guys, spent most of last night getting things configured and setup properly. I'm happy to report that after finding the right video card settings I am now running iRacing at its absolute maximum settings, all the shadows and er'thing, at over 100FPS.
