Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
This place got quiet.
Anyone else having trouble finding consistency at Phillips Island in the Skip, or the SRF for that matter? I tend to be all over the place in practice (most weeks); most likely from trying to hard, but in qualifying and races I dial it back 5% and seem to find a lot more consistency.
I haven't qualified yet, mostly because I've been finding it harder to string a few laps together without virtual death. I'm enjoying the circuit, but finding it hard to find my rhythm. Is it just me this week or is anyone else having the same issue?

Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
Yes! And there are lots of them at this track.
I think this is my problem....last season I drove the Skippy exclusively. I did that so I could just focus on the physics and force myself to learn the car. Over the last week of Season 4, Week 13, and the first week of Season 1 I drove the Mustang a lot for the Roar, plus did some MX-5 races, plus hopped in the Jetta and competed in each car, so it wasn't a jump in and jump out. It was an entire night dedicated to each car. Therefore my physics libido is messed up for the Skip.
I'm finding myself using the 'lift off throttle technique' to make the car turn in, which is what I do in the MX-5, Jetta, and Mustang....this doesn't work so well in the Skippy. In fact it will kill you quite often. I can't seem to keep that small dab of throttle on to keep her buttocks planted the way I like it.
I guess I'm learning that I can turn a lap here and there, but I'm back to finding that consistency that I had at the end of last season. Damn you iRacing for making your physics so challenging!!
Tonight I practice and qualify and see what happens. Next week we're at Spa which is a track I raced last season, so we'll see if I'm any more comfortable there, at least everywhere but Pouhon...that corner is nuts tough in the Skip.

I hear ya Spec. Visited for the first time last night (in the SRF) and couldn't wrap my puny brain around the place. Looks so wide n ez, yet was killing me with regularity. Good time for me to figure out how to be smooth on my transitions I guess.
Good luck tonight!

It took me a good 2 hours to find consistency, but I finally did. Managed to full races last night with only 2 incidents total, second race average lap was in the 48s, which I was pleased with. It's really just turns 2 and 9 that took awhile to figure out. For 2 it's all about straightening out enough to get the braking done. In 9, once I figured out I didn't need to brake at all, but just let off and coast through it, it got a lot more consistent for me.
Unfortunately the first race I did didn't count for points because only 4 people raced, and the second one had crap SOF so even though I won handily I only got 90 points. I imagine I'll be back at it tonight for a couple races in search of a better points haul.

What time do you plan on racing? Maybe we'll hook up, you'll beat me and then steal my iRating; at least that way we can keep it in the family.

Tough to say exactly, but probably either 7:15 or 8:15 out here. I'll aim for 7:15 but that might be pushing it considering I stil haven't gone in to work yet. (all times PDT)

Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
surprisingly I don't get killed that often on Phillips Island, but then I'm also not the fastest. It seems like the less I try to be fast the faster I am. Did a q and a tt this morning and my tt is 0.4s faster than my q
If you want to get your tt rating up I recommend to go out early on combos never driven before. Normally I get +/- 5 points and this morning I got +81. Not sure how the tt rating exactly works but it isn't always fair, especially with physics changes that make cars slower compared to previous seasons. So why not taking advantage every once in a while
Might have to focus on q and tt for a while anyway until the dog is house trained. Don't want to abandon a race but even less I want to clean up a mess

So you'll try and make the 10:15 race? Maybe that'll be my first and only race as I'll need some laps to find my confidence. 11:15 is too late, I won't be able to make that one.
Hope to share the track with you later!

Just found out my powers out, and it's been out since 12:00. They don't expect to get it on until 8:00 - 8:30. This will delay the little man going to bed and may shut down my night for racing at Phillips Island.

Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
I got 'er sorted the other night. Ran a race in the SRF, got killed in T4? (hard right after the run out of t2) but claimed a decent finish. Ran the Skippy after that and ran incident free, finished 2nd to Riku Alatalo. Once I figured T2 and 9 it was all butter.
I'll try and get out tonight. Had company last couple of nights, so I'm due.

If turn 9 is the other right hander then I hear ya lol. I found straight line braking is the only way I didn't either spin or go off. Watched Roo for a bit and turn 2 isn't bad either, especially using his setup. Same thing though, straight braking and cut the rumbles. I'm in the Spec though, sounds like you guys (John, Jeff and Volker are in the Skippy. I'll have to try it

T9 is the long left over the hill. T10 is the tight right hander at the bottom of the hill.

I call those corners "Oh Crap" and "Not again dammit"!!!!
Glad you'll be joining in Rack! I'm hitting an early qualifying session now, just to see if the fear of 1x's can bring me a level head and some consistency.

Poor Mustang. Not one official race yet this week. PocOhNo - East is a no-go.

I see your 47.7. I'm Q'd with a 48.0 or something I think, and then I went out and popped off a 47.6 in the warmup laps for a race immediately after the Q session.

Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
I think there's still an issue with tire temperatures and optimal grip levels. From what I've read your tires are grippiest at low temps, which is obviously a flaw in the tire model.

Re: 2013 Season 1 - Starts Jan 28 2013
The qualifying session helped with consistency. I only had one 'real' off where it was being a gorilla and driving too fast. My 47.7 was cool because I lowered my optimal by another3 tenths in turn 1 and it was also my last lap. I'm going to try and qualify again at 8:45 then race at 9:15 and 10:15.
See you guys out there.
Forgetful - I've read the same thing about the tire temps, not sure what that is about, but I guess it needs addressing. Also, glad to hear about the no official races at Pocono; hopefully the iRacing staff gets the idea that the track was a bad idea.
