Agreed, the only thing he seems consistent at is catching air in a race car every three or four years. I've always liked him though, seems like a nice guy.

Absolutely - would be great to have him and Barichello in IndyCar. GoodBlokeToHaveABeerWith Racing.
Re: Formula 1 2013 - The Official Discussion Thread
Found the 1997 season online, downloaded. Loving it.
What I noticed is that everything they say F1 can't survive with (Simple aero, tire war, open engine regulations, wide rear wings, cigarette companies) was just so much more entertaining of a sport than with the 2013 model. 1997 F1 is just fantastic. Monaco (Barichello on the podium for Stewart, Sir Jackie in tears after the race!) and Hungary have been especially incredible. Watching Damon Hill in an Arrow chase Michael Schumacher around for 8 labs within 0.3 seconds and eventually passing him under breaking down the pit straight is going to have made watching the rest of the 2013 F1 season very difficult for me.
IndyCar road races may take over my weekends. DRS and KERS and stupid tires make William a sad boy.

Not really open engine regs, but at least there's dat noise variety
That was probably the season I paid the most attention to (lolnationalism), after then it was a combo of Schumiwinslol and races in places where I couldn't just wake up early Sunday morning to see them.

'Dat old Hockenheim circuit...
I was hoping there was still enough of it left that it could be put in to iRacing, but unfortunately it looks like (from the Google Maps satellite view) it was torn up.
The way Schumi dominated Monaco that year (70 seconds) really goes to show just how incredibly talented he was in his prime. So many great races and dem cigarette-sponsored liveries...
I thought Murray Walker was going to need an incontinence pad, he sounded so happy when Damon Hill took over the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Way to go William, now I'm torrenting 17 seasons of Forumla 1 races. 1984 is done already, we'll see what else actually comes through complete.

Re: Formula 1 2013 - The Official Discussion Thread
Unrelated topic: clacksman, was Jacques Villeneuve ever great? He won the WDC in 1997 but with that season now fresh in my mind, I can't think of a single race where I went "Damn, that guy is really good!". Hill, Schumacher, Herbert, Trulli, Barichello (Yes, shut up, he was good) and some others shows flashes of brilliance. Jacques just seemed to do precisely what the car was capable of when it wasn't broken. I never sat up and went "Damn Jacques, ... damn". Possibly one of the least exciting WDCs winners I can think of.

That's ok, I am looking forward to some Murray Walker and James Hunt, but pre-Brundle I can't say I'm too bothered.
Re: Formula 1 2013 - The Official Discussion Thread
lol, skipping through the videos to see what language they were I jumped straight to the Monaco red flag moment where Prost stops and Senna flies by.

Downloading 1994...
Also, I had somehow missed the European Grand Prix, where Schumacher Frentzen and Villeneuve all qualified with exactly the same time to the thousandth.
I mean, I know how it ends, but I am on the edge of my seat waiting to find out how it ends that way. Schumacher dominated the start and then Villeneuve got passed by Frentzen like a punk...
Re: Formula 1 2013 - The Official Discussion Thread
Despite the Portugese commentary, this opening round of the 84 season is pretty sweet.
It's not only the debut of Senna at Toleman, but also the aforementioned Martin Brundle in the Tyrell, alongside Bellof in his second year.
The cars aren't the prettiest things. The huge wing endplates and low res video make it look like formula pick-up truck racing sometimes. Is that a hot tub on the back of the Ferrari?
The sounds... omg the sounds are amazing! 6s and 8s just screaming and popping and gargling.
This is the first season they banned refueling and limited the fuel capacity. It's amazing the see them pit and change all 4 tires in 30 seconds.
Some sweet skins. Dat Parmalat Brahbam and Benetton Alfa Romeo.
Up next, South Africa... in German.

Must have seen a pit stop for repairs, they've got them down to 6.9 seconds for 4 tires!

I think he could have been great. He damn near beat World Champ Hill in his rookie season (in the same car), then Hill said 'nuts to this' leaving Jacques to win in the evolved car the following year (which he did despite the biggest ever Schumi chop) and his sudden falling off the map was because Williams did a bad design when the cars got narrowed (wasn't just the Winfield livery slowing it down) and subsequently being involved in the BAR boondoggle (poor management - both personal and team - abounded) and that was effectively that. Pre-F1 he won the Indy 500 from two laps down (this pre-split too) and showed at least as many flashes of brilliance as during F1. Doing precisely what the car allowed was learned in CART (twas the several chassis/engine/tires era that was even beginning to threaten F1 in general). He can still hustle a Nationwide NASCAB pretty well on the road courses (not bad for being nearly 50) but I don't think you can look back and say "great career" with a straight face.

Re: Formula 1 2013 - The Official Discussion Thread
DC called the tire-managing-drive-to-a-lap-time situation 'rubbish'.
The SLS stole the show. Dat hussle. They need a one-make pro series of SLS' to serve as a support series for F1. Problem is it would be much better racing than the big show.
Perez is a tool.
I really think that Senna 'no longer going for a gap' quote is an overused cliche that jerks use to justify boneheaded divebomb moves. You know what else also make you 'no longer a racing driver'... being wrecked out and/or penalized/disqualified for unsportsmanlike driving.

I also wish that the punishment to your a-hole move resulted in a much worse penalty than what your victim received by having their race destroyed (parking his car barely on the inside tire, relying on the other guy even noticing your tiny overlap, then blaming him for not giving you room. GRR).
You take out 6th, you deduct 3rd place points.
You take out lead. You sit out two races.
I think the worst is getting a mere drive through for destroying another's car (Chilton from the shouldn't-even-be-on-the-same-track/when-did-F1-become-multiclass squad).

This quote is my #1 pet peeve.

Both NBC and TSN have the French Open scheduled to be on up until the GP, according to my cable box.

This evenings' internets contain much rage/nonsense about tires. Does that mean I should download the Silverstone race?
