I'll probably not make the Saturday DS event, heck I'll be struggling to do well at Mosport this week in the Stang. I'm heading to Sebring tomorrow to instruct so no practice for me tonight or tomorrow night.

I'll surely be in the 9:15 Eastern Mosport race on Sunday night, so if I can get some interest from Jeff and Stephen we'll have our own little mini DS event. My other buddy "Plate 88" - Darryl Sutherland from the 2011 GT Academy National Finals will most likely be in that race too, and he's a good shoe.

If anyone else wants to buy the Stang and has the Caddy pack, join in on the fun! The more the merrier!

Can't risk the Championship hit this week. Since I wrecked my first race I need to hang on to the 111 I got last night. I currently in the overall championship lead Very Happy

Plus I'll probably still be driving home from the track, I'm running Buttonwillow on Sunday. There are actually going to be 5 GTA Finalists there, should be a lot of fun.

Watched g44 for a bit earlier. Protip: watching without your wheel plugged in means you will have to recalibrate your wheel settings next time you go to play.

Sweet! Good-luck this weekend at Buttonwillow, it will be nice for you to size up some of your competition before Silverstone!

I can see you are in full points racing mentality. There were a few rounds towards the end of season 1 that I wanted to race more than twice, but I just couldn't afford the points risk. Kind of a bummer.

I think I may scrap the Mustang Championship this season and just jump around. I want to try new things, unfortunately for us old guys we can't just jump in and go, it takes a full night or two of practice and qualifying to get totally up to speed, consistent, and comfortable so you don't take a massive SR and iRating hit.

I'll be at Mosport Sunday night for sure, at the 9:15 and 11:15 race to get my two events for the week in. Next week I may give the Riley or the SRF a shot though.

Yeah, I don't really like it either. I'm really glad to see the survey they just sent out though, I voted for the 25% option. I think that would mostly fix the problem.

This.

I'm trying out everything I can, see what I like best of the Cadillac content before I buy anything else. SRF is the only car still untried (along with the 'rookie' versions of the Legend and Solstice, whatever that means), but will do so when it rolls around to a track I have. I imagine the Caddy will get reclassed out of a rookie car when the season/promotion ends, if it ends up anywhere in between D and B I'd be inclined to go with that most of the time.

Jeff, Stephen and I are in the sort-of-top range of division 3 the Solstice class of the inracingnewsMC which is pretty fun. Needs moar Solstices around, the last race or two I've don there have had real thin non-Mazda fields.

Test run in the Caddy at MidOhio before sleep last night. I think I'm in I love you
Visually the course appears to be a bit of a mix between pre repaving a couple years ago and present day, but pretty dead on otherwise.

Is interesting... iRacing guys are really uptight about their track development, using laser scanners to measure tracks down to the smallest level of detail, but it would be awesome if they'd actually done the scanning during the pave or something. Cool

They didn't. The patches we can see in iRacing and on tv went in the fall after the big repave. See they repaved (and re-curbed) it in the spring less than a month before the ALMS event, which isn't enough curing time to prevent those cars from ruining the surface at all the high-load points (everywhere there had been concrete patches in the old surface that they claimed the removal of said concrete being the reason they were repaving it in the first place .... sigh). So the track was scanned at least six months after the big spring re-do.

For evidence of track scanning during resurfacing, look at GT5s Motegi Road Course. Into turn 1, you can see some sort of road coming from the left. That's the pit exit built for the 2011 Indycar race. Indycar had planned to race the oval, but it was too damaged in the tsunami and construction crews were a little thin at the time so they did the quicker and cheaper pit in/out mod to the road course to stage the race on the road course using the oval pits and the new bits of pit in/out (regular Motegi road pits being too narrow for Indycar pit stops). That work was done more than one month after the disaster and more than two weeks prerace. There was also a pit-in road going to the left from the final turn which is not seen in GT5, so PD was at least there taking pictures and whatever else in that window between the disaster and the Indycar race and possibly even during the light construction.

Right, yeah didn't figure that they did, was just trying to understand Group44s comments about mixed versions of the track. The iRacing guys are extremely anal about track development. Which is why every 2 days there's a new 10 page thread about "Historical" tracks that someone starts because ___(Insert old track here)___ isn't in the game and it should be and iRacing should just lower it's standards... Well, protest #2 is in.

Enter 12am Nvidia Cup race last night/this morning. Driver in question jumps when the lights appear, waits, then drives off several seconds before the start. "That'll just make the penalty worse" I say to no one. The rest of us launch properly and as we approach t1 we can see dust from our hero running wide and off course. We proceed through t1 and 2 as he plods along off track... SUDDENLY CAR! He comes across the track at a 90* angle and I tbone him. Ok, red stripe lost control off course. No biggie. Tow to the pits and get the insta-repair.

Exit pits, come up on our hero again a few laps later. His car is dented on all corners and he's really slow. I approach slowly thinking he's just limping a broken car. A few cautious passing attempts are cut short because he's all over. Finally get along side him and WHAM, side swiped. Tow to the pits and get a 2nd insta repair. Turns out he's been attacking every car on the track.

He finally gives up (after running backwards at the leader) and quits. I'm running around just to minimize the SR damage and sure enough, one of the other rookies loses it in front of me and comes back across to clip my rear end. After the tow this time it was 7 minutes of repair time.

Checked our hero's stats and he's an oval racer, Class D 3.xx, but his road rating is rookie 1.4x Shocked

Post  Gar529 Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:18 pm

Talking about tracks and pavement and stuff, iRacing's Summit Point is at least a couple years old; the concrete strips were paved over/removed in 2010. (could be even older than that since Summit Point had the concrete until like 2007, then they paved over it, then that paving came apart so they put more concrete down in 2009, then they got rid of the concrete again in 2010).

Also, GT5s Suzuka seems to have been documented during a repave since there is paved runoff in turn 1, but not in Spoon. There was no paved runoff during the '04 F1 race and paved runoff in both areas in 2005.

Edit: I'm going to say the Summit Point version is definitely pre 2008 because it's the same version now that was there when I first tried iRacing in 2009

I think for GT5 Suzuka they just added the T1 runoff pavement to the existing model (which I'd say is the same as the GT4 model just spiffed up). The other dater to Summit is whatever course it's called with the fake Karussel isn't modeled period, that got built pretty recently.

Shenandoah Circuit, opened in '05, I don't think their model would be that old, but who knows.

(shameless self promotion Laughing)

Wouldn't be a good track to race on, in my opinion, so I don't miss it.

I didn't realize it was '05-old. If it's useless for racing then no loss.

Also I just did two time trials (SRF @ LRP, Solstice @ Summit) to try them out ... instead of a test. SR-related sigh.

That was my lesson from week 3... TTs are not for practice. You might want to cash in on every last minute of driving time, but there is no substitute for practice... unless you're Allen Iverson.

However, once up to speed somewhere TTs and Q sessions are great filler and SR padding.

I can run consistent times in the SRF at LRP on my own, but accident avoidance is tough in that car. In my first race, I had to avoid slow or spinning cars on nearly every lap. One guy even admitted, before the race, that it was his first time in the car. Dude! Get some practice first!
Still ended up 3rd, even after I got spun around by a late braker.
